Lasers

If you have the ability to visit a medspa, I couldn’t recommend it enough. When I was deep in the trenches of my acne journey, exhausted from dermatologists’ one-size-fits-all methods and harsh prescriptions, a family friend suggested I get a consultation at a medspa. To be honest, I always thought medspas were only for Botox and fillers. I was so wrong! During the consultation, they gave me a skin analysis, which included taking high-tech images of my skin analyzed by computer software. From there, the professionals could get a detailed look at what was happening beneath my skins surface and walk me through a personalized treatment plan.

In 2019, I went through an 8-session series of a treatment called Acnelase™️, designed specifically for stubborn acne. Although my medspa has since upgraded its offerings (there is over 50 specialized lasers on the market to treat literally every skin concern imaginable), Acnelase™️ was a game-changer for me. This laser works by delivering energy in ultra-short pulses, effectively targeting acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation without damaging surrounding skin. It's safe for all skin types and doesn't require skin cooling or downtime, but let me tell you it hurt like a bitch. I was only in pain when the laser was running, it feels like your skin is burning, and you can smell the peach fuzz frying off your face lol, BUT I swear my results were worth it. I literally hate these pictures so much but if it helps convince someone about the power of medical grade lasers than so be it.

Facials

Beyond lasers, medspas offer a range of treatments like chemical peels and specialized facials that can be customized to your skin's needs. These treatments not only address active acne but also help in improving skin texture and reducing post-acne marks. The beauty of medspas is their ability to tailor a comprehensive skincare plan, combining various treatments to achieve your skins goals. Now, I maintain my results with DiamondGlow dermabrasion treatments and regular facials. During facials I have gotten light peels which exfoliate the outer layer of your skin, revealing fresher skin underneath and improving overall texture. I think a light peel is a great place to start if its your first time going to an esthetician. I’ve heard and researched wonders about deep chemical peels, but never gone through with getting one because they require a daunting amount of downtime (1-2 weeks of redness and peeling).

I go to FACE Medspa in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and couldn’t recommend Dr. Holly Culter enough. Personally, I have not been to elsewhere but searching for “acne medspa near me” or “medical facial [your city]” is a great place to start. Be sure to read reviews and stalk their social media accounts to confirm they’re experienced and provide tangible results before booking.

Disclaimer: Medspa treatments can be pricey. Not everyone has access to this kind of care, and that’s okay. Great skin doesn’t have to come from lasers or facials, and this section isn’t meant to pressure you into dropping thousands. I’m here to inform what worked for me! If you’re interested and it’s within your means, medspas can be an incredible resource. If not, there are plenty of affordable, effective options out there too (and we’re covering those, don’t worry).

High Frequency

A high-frequency wand is a tool that uses high-frequency electrical currents to quickly heal and restore skin health, and oh my god, I cannot shut up about this machine.

High-frequency facial devices use a glass electrode filled with either neon or argon gas to deliver mild electrical currents directly to your skin. When the wand's electrode touches your skin, it generates a gentle electrical current that produces oxygen molecules, creating an antibacterial effect and gentle warmth in your skin tissue. This process boosts circulation, reduces inflammation, helps remove toxins, and floods your skin cells with essential nutrients and hydration. What's the result? The antibacterial properties tackle acne-causing bacteria head-on, helping to clear and calm the skin. The boost of oxygen improves your overall texture, evens your skin tone, and enhances that natural glow we all chase. Plus, the electrical current promotes collagen and elastin synthesis, meaning firmer, bouncier skin. It can even help smooth fine lines or depuff under-eye bags. You can even use it on your scalp (with a special comb attachment) to promote hair growth. Basically, it’s a beauty multitasker you never knew you needed.

Fun fact, before the invention of “modern” antibiotics, high frequency was used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of strep throat and other infections because of its effectiveness at killing bacteria. Nowadays, it is totally derm-approved and mainly used in spas and salons as a skincare treatment! But but but, you can get your own high-frequency wand and use it at home! Cosmopolitan put out a list of their favorite wands I'll link it here! I ordered mine from Amazon :)
